Getting settled in my new home...Getting ready for my show next week. Getting some new pics up! Here's a
small one from my last show at Temple Bar...Click on it to see the full-size and download it to your very own desktop! Not that I'm saying you'd want to. But if you did...You can.

Yes, I know, I've been totally MIA. But it's been for a good cause. I flew out to North Carolina to watch over my niece and nephew for 10 days while my sister and brother-in-law went on vacation. Wow. Music is so much easier than parenting. Anyway, the real parents arrived home safe and sound this evening, and we're all intact and not too traumatized, and soon I'll be back in Lalaland practicing and writing away...Getting ready for my Hotel Cafe show in a couple weeks. Hoping to reaaaaallllly rock it well. Got some good song ideas with the kids. Unforutnately most of them having to do with poopy and peepee. But, you know, I'll work it out.

Happy day after Easter, Happy week after Passover, Happy no particular reason. Actually I'm happy for a VERY particular reason this morning: I think I found a home. I've been like a puppy at the pound, waiting for someone to adopt me before I become rabid and drooly...Anyway, I'll find out for sure later today, but I think I'm in. It's this sweet little 14,000 square foot mansion in Bel Air next door to Justin Timberlake. Just kidding.

Everything else has been subsumed by the house search. Except that I have taken the time to write my first song since leaving New York...A bit of a character study, really. I'm hoping to play it at my Temple Bar show on the 17th...

In other news, Billy Block from Western Beat called me up to ask me to play a 3-song set at his showcase this Thursday, hosted by Chris Morris from Indie 103 radio. I LOVE it when that happens! I should go on at 9 o'clock, and it's at the M Bar on Vine in Hollywood. Just like the muppets would have wanted. Except that it's not exactly at the corner of Hollywood & Vine. If it were, maybe Orson Welles would be there handing out Rich & Famous Contracts. If he were still alive. Or even his ghost. Who knows. It's the idea that keeps me going.

So even though I said I would find my voice, I couldn't. I looked everywhere. It was nowhere to be found. Not until just yesterday, really. And that's probably because I'm in Tucson and my mom is making yummy things like this salad...Mmm! saladThen last night I made a KICKIN' lemon meringue pie, but I didn't take a picture because I forgot to and now it's all gone. Today I'm playing guitar and trying to sing, thinking about this trip and feeling happy to be feeling better...New podcast coming SOMEDAY I promise!!

Good show in Dallas last night. My voice is gone Daddy gone it's gone gone gone...Road cold! All winter long I bragged and felt righteous as all my friends fell to the flu...God has smote me. But I will find a voice by tonight. Here's a shot of me last night, playing with Lewis Case on violin...Yeehaw!

Well I'm on the road again...Doobee doom doobee doom...I've gone through about 6 climate changes since leaving New York...It was snowing the day I left..By the time I got down to Charlotte it was early spring--cherry blossoms and 60s sun. I had to actually (gasp) WASH my car--which if you know me you know it's a rarity--to get all the salt off. Played a marvelously fun show at the Evening Muse, then took off across the south. As I passed through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, it got warmer and warmer...Until, yesterday, when I hit Texas, I thought--Oh my God I'm HOT! Thank you God.

I've enclosed a photo that my 4-year-old nephew took of me, because that's cute. But I WISH I had taken pictures of the Motel 6 I stayed in in Jackson, Mississippi last night. I wish I had taken pictures of the blood stains on the carpet, in case the police needed them for evidence. Or I wish I had taken pictures of all the teenagers who kept going in to have sex and leaving right after. Or I wish I had taken pictures of the bug on the pillow when I walked into the room. I wish I hadn't stayed there.

Okay, here are my Oscar predicitions. I know you're on pins and needles waiting to see what I predict. So predictions are forthcoming. I predict that I'm about to give you my predictions. Right-here we go.

...I'm going to have a pizza party on Sunday night and get down with all the dresses...Helen Mirren will win Best Actress (duh), Forrest Whittaker will win Best Actor and poor Peter O'Toole will have to look gracious as he seethes about his damn "Lifetime Achivement Honorary Loser" Oscar...Eddie Murphy will win Best Supporting Actor and will make the evening's most interesting speech. Jennifer Hudson will win Supporting Actress and as the music swells to sweep her offstage she'll shout, "In your face, Simon!" (I don't even watch American Idol.)
Scorcese will finally win for the Departed, An Inconvenient Truth will win Best Doc (duh), Pan's Labyrinth will barely edge out Lives of Others for best Foreign Film, even though I want Lives of Others to win...And, in a crazy twist of fate reminiscent of Crash (yuck) winning Best Picture, Little Miss Sunshine will walk away with the grand finale and the rest of the world will kind of crinkle their faces and turn to each other and go, "Really? That? Really? Huh." And it'll be over.
Thank you!

Noticed that the last pics were barely visible...Low light is one thing--NO light is just hard to see. So here's a shot of me with the boys of Kharma Bums fame at Arlene's Grocery, working our way through a tribute to Janis Joplin's version of "Me and Bobby McGee"...

OH MY HOLY GOD GOODLORDHAVEMERCY WHOA MAN WHOA IT'S COLD. Nineteen degrees as I write, shivering, quivering, willing myself to remember the days when it didn't hurt to take a deep breath. Yes, a little melodrama is good for a cold morning. I ain't kidding, though. It's 19. Nineteen. I can feel heating oil prices rise in my veins.

Luckily, before it got FREEZING here, I had a wonderful show at a great little place called Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side...It was in the 40s so people weren't afraid to go outside. Had a rollicking good time. The lighting was low, the wine list was fantastic, and there was percussive audience participation for a spontaneous a capella encore of "Mercedes Benz". Good times. Low light examples follow.

Merry New Year!! A new year, a fresh journal...

I had a fantastic entry into 2007: a morning of fresh bagels, afternoon nap, the best damn ragu I've ever had, a house party with friends and family, a walk up to Prospect Park just in time to have hugs and kisses at midnight and jump up and down watching fireworks fall all over us...A toast to James Brown, homemade ice cream and cookies at about 2 o'clock in the morning, and wayyyyyyy too much champagne. A soft rain starting falling right after midnight, washing us clean for the new year. Yes, yes, yes. Oh! Also, I went ice-skating for the first time on New Year's Eve! Fun!

December 11, 2006

Had a wonderful show at Arlene's Grocery right here in NYC last week...Debuted my new song, "Christmas Love Song" and really let it all hang out for my last show of 2006. Then I had a tough come-down this weekend..It's hard to feel sanctified and then land back on earth again...It helped getting my first New York Christmas tree, though. When you brush the branches it says "Fuggeddaboudit!" Just kidding. And my buddy Marco made homemade eggnog!! Yummmmmmmmmmm...

November 29, 2006

What an exciting few weeks...Thanksgiving, a friend's wedding, and the best part: opening 3 shows for Dan Bern! I wore pink corduoroy pants; drove up the Pacific Coast listening to a really weird but really fun Bob Dylan album (Shot of Love); watched the palm trees and people wave; sang my heart and throat out; watched Dan do a BIZARRE riff on "Project Runway" to describe sending Planet Pluto into non-planet exile; and generally had the time of my life. I want more!! Special thanks to Volker Neumann for sending me a few pics of the Slim's show in San Francisco...

October 30, 2006

Well, I just HAD to put up some cause and effect...Cause: going up to Connecticut and picking apples.
Effect: apple pie!!! Yummmmmmm...

October 20, 2006

Jeez, a whole month, huh? Bad me! But with so many bloggers and so little time, you know, whatevs man. Plus I'm really starting to get into my whole podcasting series...It's like when I was 4 and I would use this flexible navigating lamp on my parents' boat for a microphone and do shows...It's the same kind of fun! Yeah I'm still a kid. What's your point?

Let's see...Last weekend I had a fun time playing at Crash Mansion with my buddies the Kharma Bums, and the fabulous Tom Licamelli from the Knockout Drops accompanied me on his gleaming white strat. Here are a few pics...That's all for now because I have to practice nonstop to get ready to open for Dan Bern next month!!!
Deep breath..Ahh!!!!

September 21, 2006

I had a great week in LA: playing shows, celebrating my grandfather's 90th birthday, and swaying with the palm trees. I miss palm trees! But I was happy to come home, happy to discover that the leaves are just starting to tease us with the idea of changing color...Not so happy to discover that my car had been broken into, but even that was done nicely. No broken windows, nothing taken (nothing to take), just a bunch of my papers strewn all over the car and street. Ah well. I would love to show you some fabulous pics from LA, but SOMEONE (I) forgot to bring the camera charger, so no pictures were taken. Trust me--it was fun.

Last but not least, I just uploaded my new podcast, so please check it out if you're so inclined! (www.sarahdashew.com/feed1.xml)

August 29, 2006

Here's what's going on: Andre Agassi is still alive in his last U.S. Open, and my first New York mouse pet is not. Friends were over for dinner on Sunday, and we discovered an uninvited guest, who we promptly named Johnathon Livingston Mousey. Then we killed him. I'm sorry, PETA. It had to be done. He wanted the pecorino.

But I made sure to say a little prayer, asking him for forgiveness...

I also had a very good show last week, and felt very thankful for all the lovely people who came out and hooted and hollered. And I wore my New York City t-shirt and felt cool. And I wore red toes. Now I'm getting excited about doing some shows out in California! But first, I have 2 new songs that need recording. So I'll sign off and get to work now.

p.s. Stay tuned for my next podcast, due next week!!

August 06, 2006

Yes, I KNOW I haven't been writing much this summer; forgive me it's been apocolyptically hot in New York. But I've been managing to play some shows, practice, even (gasp) write, walk and walk and fall in love with this fair, multi-boroughed metropolis. I had a really wonderful show on July 28th at the Living Room; had a good crowd and man we all really went to church. Right now I'm nursing a cut lip from playing harmonica with my friend's band The Kharma Bums (Arlene's Grocery next Fri. the 11th), so I feel very cool. Thought I'd show a couple pics of playing in the city: subways with my gear, rocking out at the Living Room. Life is good. I'm getting very excited for my September show in LA and a trip to the beach!

July 11, 2006

The rest of the tour went very well, and now it's taken me close to 3 weeks to start accomodating myself to New York's humidity factor! Good God. I'm just so grateful that the subways are air-conditioned.

So far so good. I'm getting ready to play a couple solo shows at the Living Room (without the boys--sob--but we'll soon be re-united), and I just got Jealous Girl up on iTunes! Life moves along. Right now I'm humming Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather" and wishing I could quit sweating long enough to play my guitar. Here are some more fun pics from the road...Rocking out in Nashville, Charlotte, and Billy Block's radio show...
p.s. VIVA L'ITALIA!!!!!!!

June 13, 2006

Greetings from the road! We've been winding our way up and down and all around the country, playing
shows and converting the unconverted...Everyone has been great, and we've only had to replace one tire!
Now we're in Nashville, waiting for the boys (let it be known--boys TOTALLY take longer than girls to get ready) to get some late breakfast (2 p.m.) before our show tonight..

May 23, 2006

Last week was busy and great...Played in San Diego and Santa Barbara...Good practice for all the driving we'll be doing in June! But this journal entry is dedicated to our friend Jack, the friend, the fan, the man who made Santa Barbara a roiling fun success...He advertised, publicized, witnesssed and dragged his friends! Thanks Jack--you make a great street team!

Cinco de Mayo. Viva la Raza. Another chance for good Mexican food before the tour...I'm starting to get really excited--seems like it's coming together nicely; a nice, cool drive through the Deep South in summer. Mmmm...
In other news, we had a great show at Hotel Cafe on Wednesday. I opened for Susie Suh, who has a buttery rich voice to go with a buttery rich backing band. We rocked, then stayed late to spend time with good friends. Don Adkins was kind enough to share a couple stage pics with me...
Check out Don's website here...

April 07, 2006

Big ups to the rain people! We had a great time at Temple Bar on Tuesday...I was shocked and awed by the brave folks who slipped and slid their way into Santa Monica. The boys sang sweet harmonies, and we hung out and bonded well. KCRW was in the house, featuring a cool band called Bitter:Sweet and so we drank bitters and whispered sweet nothings in each other's ears. Just kidding. I had an Amstel Light.

March 17, 2006

Well Austin was cool! The whole Ray Benson bash was a blast of goodness, sweat, legends, serious rock n' roll! I ran up onstage with Ray, the Asleep at the Wheel crew, Jeff Healey, Sonny Landreth, Bob Schneider, Stephen Bruton and a handful of others to revel in the heat of playing to 1,500 rollicking folks. "Hash it Out" was a hit, and I got a big high-five from Ray. Yay! Here are a couple pics from the night...

Does this look like fun or what??Photos by Felicia Graham

March 06, 2006

Thanks to everyone who came out LATE Saturday night to Room 5! Very cool joint, nice vibe, good crowd. It was fun, even though we missed my new drummer Tommy, who abandoned us for a trip to Austria. How could he??!! Thank God Johnny Wells was there, rockin' the bass. And thank God I didn't get my hair stuck in my harmonica rack like I usually do. Success all the way 'round!

February 16, 2006

Thank you thank you to everyone who came out and helped make last night's show so great! We sweated, we rocked and rolled, my hair got stuck to my lip gloss, and my harmonica rack (damn that wingnut!)... It was heaven! Boy it was fun. The new boys--John Wells and Thomas Kafel--lent some sweet backing vocals and rocked the rhythm; it was a real party. Much good. I promised to upload pictures, but I can't find the camera this morning so it'll have to wait. That is all.

January 23, 2006

I finally joined Myspace. Man is that thing confusing and huge. Apparently I have a very close friend in Turkey now..Also I have 400 million people in my network or something like that. Like the population of Europe. Anyway, I'm having fun browsing around. Check out my page if you're so inclined: www.myspace.com/sarahdashew. Now onto more important things: my nephew turned three this weekend! He requested a BatMa'am cake. Yep--not Batman, BatMa'am. Don't laugh. This is a big improvement over calling him "J.J.". No one knows why he did. For about a year. But it was great to see
this little toddler screaming down the hallway singing, "Nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh J.J!!"

January 09, 2006

I had to strain my ears, but I heard it! I heard me singing "Hash it Out" on tv! Whoopeee! Then it was
over and time to move on...I don't know why it's so much harder this year to get back into the swing of
things, but it is. I need a good book. I need a haircut.

January 04, 2006

Well, it's a whole new year and I'm trying to shake the holiday cobwebs out of my head and get to
work. I'm getting pretty excited about my NATIONAL music debut! Tomorrow I'll hear myself
(if I listen really hard) on "My Name is Earl". My name is not Earl. My name is Sarah. But they can
call me anything they want because they paid me. Yee haw!

Okay okay, I'm going to practice. Strings need changing and people need calling, songs need writing
and I need to brush my teeth again. Man coffee sure tastes good but it's hell on one's breath.
